Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin asks Mayor Rahm Emanuel to stop Occupy Chicago arrests

Independent Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin today asked Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to stop arresting Occupy Chicago demonstrators. Andy will hold a 6:00 P.M. news conference Monday to renew his request that the mayor allow peaceful overnight protests in downtown Chicago. Andy says that denying peaceful protests empowers violent psychopaths such as Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. Andy does not support most of the goals of the various “Occupy” movements but he endorses their right to protest. “Because of Barack Obama’s failed economic policies the system isn’t working for tens of millions of Americans,” Andy says.

Independent Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin says “Occupy Chicago” demonstrators should be allowed to spend overnight in city parks

Andy asks Mayor Emanuel to stop arresting Occupy Chicago protesters

(CHICAGO) (October 24, 2011) Independent Republican Party Presidential Candidate Andy Martin today asked Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to allow peaceful protesters to spend overnight in the city’s parks. Andy said tens of millions of Americans were suffering due to President Barack Obama’s failed economic policies. Andy’s letter to Mayor Emanuel(without the heading) follows:

Dear Rahm:

I am writing to ask you to stop arresting Occupy Chicago demonstrators and to allow them to spend overnight in Chicago parks adjacent to the Loop. If necessary, I would be willing to mediate between your office, the Chicago Police (for whom I have the highest regard) and the Occupy Chicago demonstrators to reach a reasonable accommodation.

Much to my amazement, I returned to Chicago in 1968 just as the Democratic National Convention riots were beginning. Mayor Daley made maters worse by trying to prevent peaceful demonstrations.

I recently spent a night with the Occupy Wall Street group in lower Manhattan. They were peaceful and media reports of the encampment were grossly distorted. I suspect matters are the same with Occupy Chicago.

I do not agree with most of what most of the “Occupy” groups are demanding but there are actually some protesters that adhere to what are core “conservative” views. There are serious social issues that need to be addressed by our society. I will be releasing a list of my proposals for an umbrella “Occupy” manifesto later this week.

I believe that allowing peaceful demonstrations is a hallmark of a decent and cognizant society. Peaceful demonstrations, even when they my appear to be a nuisance to municipal authorities, allow people to express their views and, yes, to “vent” at the establishment. I have promised that if I am elected president I will allow the “Occupy” demonstrators to camp out on the White House lawn until they feel their concerns are being heard. You do not have to agree with everything someone says to believe in protecting their right to protest. Unlike some Republicans I have no fear of the demonstrators.

When we seek to prevent peaceful demonstrations or to unreasonably restrict them we create the conditions for more antisocial activity. Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn created the “Weathermen’s” “Days of Rage” and trashed downtown Chicago because Mayor Daley had sought to clamp down on peaceful remonstrance. No one remembers Daley’s handling of the 1968 Convention or the aftermath as one of his better hours. And we certainly don’t need to empower violent psychopaths like Ayers and Dohrn.

I am sure that reasonable people can find a location for overnight demonstrations. The City should make that accommodation available. If you can resolve this matter on your own with the protesters, by all means do so. I am very occupied trying to make our Southside neighbor Barack Obama a one-term president. If, on the other hand, you believe you could benefit from my input, please feel free to ask and I will do my best to assist you in reaching an agreement with Occupy Chicago.

While the Chicago political system may be working for you-you got elected, after all— because of the failures of President Obama’s economic policies the “system” is not working for tens of millions of Americans. They are afraid and they are frustrated. These Americans deserve the right to protest both during the day and overnight. Let’s work together to preserve the right to protest and demonstrate.

In Air Force ROTC we used to say “Peace is our profession.” Let’s work to arrive at a peaceful resolution of the ability of Occupy Chicago to demonstrate overnight in the Loop or vicinity. Chicago has a history of excessive reaction to protest movements going all the way back to the Haymarket Square riots which were triggered by the police in 1886. “Peace is still my profession.” It should be yours as well. Let’s work to arrive at a peaceful resolution and make Chicago proud.

I urge you to reconsider the city’s policy and to make an area available for overnight demonstrations somewhere in the Loop or adjacent to the downtown area.

Cordially,

ANDY
